The creative force and expertise behind the scenes at Signal Safety is Tim Africa. Tim started his lifelong association with the trucking industry in 1971.  Upon leaving the military, he took a truck driving job hauling lumber and from there he had  jobs hauling ore,  paper products, construction materials and even driving a “honey wagon.”

One day while watching a state trooper stop a truck the thought occurred to him it was probably easier chasing trucks than driving them.  Tim retired from the Nevada Highway Patrol.

While with the NHP, he developed the state’s Motor Carrier Safety Audit and Compliance Review program.  He also founded the International Inspectors Competition - Challenge series (now the CVSA North American Inspector’s Championships).   Upon retiring from the state patrol, Tim managed the International Inspectors Competition for the USDOT Office of Motor Carriers and the State of South Carolina.

After the CVSA assumed management of the NAIC, Tim took up consulting with motor carriers full time and developed the PASS BOOK system to help companies with their compliance efforts.  He has been through hundreds of Safety Audits and Compliance Reviews,  working on both sides of the desk.   As the co-owner of Signal Safety, Tim oversees all aspects of the development of the PASS BOOK program and continues to help motor carriers as a safety consultant.

Tim has received recognition for his contributions to commercial vehicle safety both on the national and international level.  Recognition was given by the American Trucking Associations, The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance, The Federal Highway Administration,  and  Rodney Slater, Secretary Of the United States Department of Transportation.  And, the International Inspectors Competition was recognized by President Clinton for its commitment to safety.

While he has been fortunate to be involved with the motor carrier industry at many levels, he still finds it most interesting where the rubber meets the road.
Safety is an attitude!
